The Palm Wine Boys at the Frat House (Covina, CA, Aug. 21, 2004)
by Steve Manseau
There is a gentle intimacy to their playing, a sense that the guys really enjoy what they are doing and genuinely want to include the audience in the interplay.
Linley is the unofficial leader of the group, the primary songwriter andsinger. Hos compositions tend to be about fairly weighty subjects- death and broken romance, among other things, reared their heads this Saturday night- but they tend to leave you on a high, due largely to Linley's insightful, mature songwriting perspective. The aptly named "It's Important", for instance, is ostensibly about death but Linley finds transcendence in the spiritual and ancestral connections between generations. Hence, it is one of the more positive death songs I've heard.

I love this band. They are a cross between folk, Caribbean and African. If you are into world-esque music that puts a smile on your face, check them out. - shari
